3 Easy Tips For Writing A Great Tagline
“Support your local caffeine dealer.”
One of my favourite ever slogans for a coffee shop. It's direct, simple, and makes you do a double take — caffeine dealer? Oh, you mean coffee — and then laugh after that. It's an inside joke for all coffee lovers that we can't function without caffeine running through our veins.
That's what a great tagline does. It makes you feel something for the brand. Even better if it makes you feel like part of a community through a shared joke.
Is it time to revisit your tagline?
If it is, here are three ways to approach it:
1. How would I explain what I do to my five-year-old nephew?
Looking at your business through this lens helps you simplify a lot of the unnecessary fluff and jargon.
2. What community does my customer identify with?
What community would they say they belong to, or want to belong to? What language do members of this community use? Aspirational identity can be very powerful as a purchase motivator.
3. What action do you want your customer to take?
If you're at a loss, try starting with a verb — in the above example it's “support”. What could be the verb or action you want your customers to take? “Look good in our shirts made from the softest ethically-sourced cotton”? “Preserve your wedding day with our videography”? Begin with a verb and then refine the rest of it from there.
